Jessica Ziakin-Cook

My work uses architectural forms to create a vocabulary of interior self-portraiture. Starting from the premise that my heart is a room, I lift buildings and architectural spaces from Western art to examine what this room might ideally look like. My work combines the medieval devotional practice of copying with Postmodernism’s uneasiness towards dogmatic allegiances to meaning systems. By rendering found images through methods of carbon copy, blind contour, sculpture, and memory, I give form to the mysterious struggle of preparing one’s heart, and rely on grace to perfect my labours, manual and spiritual.
